I was asked by Decca Classics in 2013 to provide four arrangements for Nicola Benedetti’s Homecoming album: The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, Ae Fond Kiss, My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose and The Ashokan Farewell. As always, I felt collaboration would be the key to ensuring the pieces set the musical tone Nicola and the producers wanted. Nicola and myself both agreed that the key to these arrangements was allowing these beautiful folk melodies speak for themselves. We worked together by phone and email, developing this concept and also bearing in mind the content of the rest of the album (Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and other folk songs with Scottish folk legends Ally Bain and Phil Cunningham).
The recording sessions with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra were held at Glasgow City Halls. I had the privilege of co-producing the tracks with legendary producer Andrew Walton (http://kaproductions.co.uk/
), providing notes during the sessions alongside Andrew and further notes on the mixes he sent in the run up to the album release.
We were all delighted to hear that the album went to No.17 in the UK pop album charts, spent several weeks at No.1 in the UK classical album charts, in addition to being named as iTunes Classical Album of the Year in 2014.
